March 1 - 29 Spring, Caterpillars, Butterflies, & Bugs

This month we will have a spring focus to our learning.
(we actually started Feb 28th)
Bugs, Bees, and the  Lifecycle of Butterfly,
We will be working through as much of Spring Break as possible to be able to end at the end of the first week of June.  We will have company for 2 weeks - but hope to be able to work on field trips and PE & social skills during that time.


LANGUAGE ARTS:
Explode the code:
Lesson 8 Review Lesson (8pages)

Wrote a letter to penpal in Cambodia
Recieved a letter back from Cambodia
Wrote a response back to Cambodia
        Very excited; have asked her to write a response on her own this week and we will edit it next week! 
         -Edited what she wrote at home and added a few more comments and questions
         -She also drew a picture of her doll Emma
          -Also sent a picture of her with her doll and one with Avi along with her letter!

Personal dictionary
     *Started a book with a page for each letter
      *Words included that she finds difficult – encouraging her to add words that she comes across when she is reading that she doesn’t know

FINE ARTS:
Dance: - done in term 1 with our Christmas Concert
Big A created her own costume - with a tensor bandage - and made up a few fun songs & dances.

Drama:
Big A does mini plays at kids club Wed night - they take turns acting out their Bible Story each week.

Music:
4 hour Violin
4 hour Bakerview Choir
2 hour Northview Choir & The performance at the HEAT hockey game Sunday March 9th.

Art:
The girls enjoyed creating butterflies and spiders out of coffee filters, clothes pins and pipecleaners.
Big A drew over 20 pictures for all the teachers and volunteers at Music Academy.
Big A drew me a beautiful picture of my favorite daisy, and a note that made me cry.
(not sure if you can read it - but it says: " you chose me as youer child - you are the best mom in the world - i love you")

HEALTH & CAREER:
We are learning about chemicals, and dyes in our food and making changes to our diet.
Well - week 1  dye, chemical free went quite well - saw changes in little A's behavior. Still playing with diets & supplements, and now Epsom Salt bath times. The baths seem to really be helping with sleeping more (less wake times during the night), and less leg pains.

Week #1 (March 2-8)

   *head was completely under water, and swam under water for a short distance
   *teacher poured water directly onto her head - she had no problems with this
   *she jumped into the deep end without a life jacket (teacher was there to catch and encourage her)

Week #2 (March 9-15)

     *Was only able to swing one bar on the monkey bars. – not sure if she lost her drive or if it was too hard; we will practice more often now that it is sunny outside!

Week #3 (March 16 - 22)

1.5 hour Walk to Mill Lake and Play at Mill Lake.

our focus this month is on the changing of season to spring, weather, bugs, and the lifecycle of the butterfly.

*Big A and Little A enjoyed playing with little bug, butterfly, and frog toys.

 Field Trip:
HONEYBEE CENTER
     *explored the bug room & played bug learning games
     *listened and interacted with bug presentation
     *investigated a live honey bee box & found the queen bee
      *watched a movie about honey bees and the health benefits of honey
 
SOCIALS:
This month Big A will be working through 2 books:
1) Canada is for Kids  - this is a colouring book that has educational facts about Canada printed at the bottom of each page to make learning about Canada more fun.

2) My World in Maps - this book has a mapping focus. While using this book Big A will learn mapping skils such as "shape, grids, direction and symbols".
     *pg4 - campares shapes from a side view, bird's eye view, and top view.
     *pg 5 -Recognizes shapes of objects from above (lake, river, house, hill...)
     *pg 6 -Differentiates between landforms and water bodies
     *pg 7 -Application: identifies landforms and water bodies in a picture.
     *pg8 - Identifies map symbols and makes a map key.
     *pg9 - Uses a key to interpret symbols and follow a story.
     *pg10 - Uses a key to identify different features a long a route.
     *pg 11 - Uses a key  to follow a route.
     *pg 12 - Uses a map grid to locate objects.

THERAPIES & SUPPORTS:
Wed March 5 - 1 hour Occupational Therapy

- Miss Caylee will be taking over for Miss Victoria – connected well with her today

- loves to wear the green stretch suit and to play with shaving cream

 Friday March, 14th - Social Skills Class. Sounds like it was a great class :) (2hours)

*Read stories while enjoying the pressures of sitting in a bucket, and having her sister rub her feet...

Little A is learning that if she doesn't sit nice on her chair... that she will fall off and cut her eye and have to go to the hospital.. again..  she enjoys giving mommy grey hairs!
