April 2014: Plants & Gardens and the Lifecycle of the Frog

This month we will continue to have a spring focus to our learning.
Plants & Gardens, Food Groups, Lifecycle of the Frog & Easter.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
Week #1 (March 31 - April 4)
1-2 hours outside exploring Blue Heron Reserve
1 hour Bowling
2 hours walking around and playing at Mill Lake
1 hour Swimming lessons
1 hour OT

Week #2 (April 7-11)
*2 hours at Grant Park. (playing on playground, swings, monkey bars, throwing & kicking a ball around, playing fribee with mom & little A.
*1 hour swimming lesson
*4 hours walking / running through the Vancouver Aquarium & Stanley Park
*balloon "volley ball"
*tag
*hide & seek
*30 min neighborhood walk
*balance steps. played a game with Little A being an alligator and trying to get Big A to fall off the stepping stones and Big A had to work extra hard on balancing.

Week #3 (April 14-18)
2 hours walking, running, exploring Blue Heron Reserve
1 hour Bowling
1 hour swimming (45 min lessons) (15 mins fun)


Week #4 (April 21-25)

Week #5 (April 28 - May 2)
2hours walking, running, exploring Blue Heron Reserve
1 hour Bowling
1 hour swimming
2 hours at Grant Park. frisbee, running, soccer, monkey bars, swing, balance beam, climbing, sliding..
20 mins on trampoline

FINE ARTS:
Dance: - done in term 1 with our Christmas Concert

Drama:
Big A does mini plays at kids club Wed night - they take turns acting out their Bible Story each week.

Music:
8 hour Violin
8 hour Bakerview Choir


Art:
Starting felting project
- Felted a little mouse.
- She got a little bored as it takes quite a bit of time and repetition!

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Spelling Book – level 3
-homophones – sound same but different spelling and meanings.

* good understanding; just had to go over some meanings of words
-rhyming words
-long i
-filling blanks with words
-crossword puzzle

Writing A – Z
* combining sentences; picked up very quickly!
- Making one sentence into 2
o –quite hard to do alone
o Writing p and 9 backwards a lot

- Combining two sentences into one
o Easier for her 7/8
 
Spelling: We made magnetic letters to create words & sentences on the fridge.
Girls were having a blast creating  - and everyone was stunned that little A actually spelled a few words and loved spelling her name :)

Got 14/21
o Freeze (freez), does (dos), could (coud), goes (go’s), would (woud), tray (traiy), stray (strai)
o These were words she knew one month ago
o We will need to do more regular spelling tests.
Spelling – 14/20 Day 1

- Trouble with does (doe’s), goes (goe’s), agree (agrea), again (agan), above (abuve), our (ower)

- Day 2 – 13/20

o Got all the wrong ones from Day 1 correct

o Trouble with tunnel(tunnle), mitten (mittin), traffic (trafic), ladder (lader), kitten (kittin), button (buttin), ribbon (ribbin)

HEALTH & CAREER:
Emotions Unit
-I read out an emotion and she acted it out with facial expression and body language – she did very well!
-drew 4 faces – sad, bored, angry and happy
-using the letters of ‘friends’ she was to write one sentence for each; this was extremely difficult for her; she was only able to do 4/7
-worksheet on what makes her feel certain emotions
Made kale chips
-helped me pick kale from the garden, wash it, apply olive oil and salt, and then bake them in the oven.
MATHEMATICS:
Jump Math
-Patterns – 13 pages
-identifying patterns, describing patterns and finding mistakes.
-understands concept quite well but needs to watch for little details as she tended to mix up addition and subtraction.
-we worked together a lot on this section- was slow work but important for her to take her time and look at details.
Jump Math
-continuing review of year
-telling time – some difficulty with ¼ after and ¼ to
-comparing units of area
-days and months –learning a song for remembering the months as she mixes up May and Sept.
-shapes – some difficulties with cylinders and pyramids.

- Still used her fingers at times to add two numbers to ten.

SCIENCE:

**Started classes at the Blue heron Nature Reserve.March 31st.
Each class is 2 hours in length.
They spend part of the class inside learning and making crafts and most of the class outside exploring the reserve and learning hands on about the Blue Herons and other creatures on site.
     *Big A wrote her SEA about her findings  / some of the things she learned at the Blue Heron Reserve - I photocopied it for her file :)

2 hour Science Class at Blue Heron Reserve on April 7th.
After the class Big A was telling me all about a turtle that she got to play with, and bug dipping.

*Made an Easter Garden Scene:
*Using 2 pots, a stone, dirt, grass seed, popsical stick crosses.
We look forward to seeing the fresh new grass growing... to symbolize the new life that we have in Christ.

2)Lifecycle of Frog
Playing with sorting frogs - grouping them in a variety of ways... colors, 2's, 5's, rainbow groups...
Reading and playing with a frog life cycle poster and the little sorting frogs
Exploring the Frog exhibit at the Vancouver Aqurium.
 *she enjoyed explaining to me about the bright colored poison frogs.

It is very cute - Big A & Little are "playing school" and Big A is teaching Little A all about frogs, and the lifecycle, preparing and implementing art projects, and readinging her stories. So cute :)

April 9th - Enjoyed an amazing field trip day to the Vancouver Aquarium with both girls.
Big A enjoyed telling me about a bunch of the different frogs & penguins. Her favorite was watching the education talk on the Beluga Whales.

our focus this month is continue on the changing of season to spring, growing seeds and the lifecycle of the frog.

Big A enjoyed telling me all about these brightly colored frogs... They are poisonous...

A glimps from the inside. It was fun to see all the stages in this little "pond"...eggs, tadpoles, growing tadpoles, baby frogs, med frogs and big ones too.





SOCIALS:
Mapping
-finished a map quiz where she had to name continents and put them on the map correctly. – she needed to study a map first quite a bit to get this.
- able to name the 7 continents and 4 oceans


THERAPIES & SUPPORTS:
April 2nd - OT (1 hour)
 *Spent a lot of time swinging
 *Foot Stretches

April 8th - OT (1 hour)
April 16th - OT (1 hour)

April 17th - Our Behaviour Consultant came over. Big A learned about different circles of people...
Private thoughts, conversations, and touch... what is ok for family, friends, teachers, neighbors... Loved the way this was taught and will continue to teach and work with this!!

I was given a new bedtime routine and melatonin was suggested for the girls (as they get very little sleep) (Big A gets about 5 hours a night)... The new routine has been implemented and melatonin given... so far - so good :)

April 30 - 1 hour OT

PLAY:
The girls have played a lot of Lego since I have moved it out onto the deck. Usually 2+ hours a day.
It is fun to see them building, playing together , and listening to their imaginations hard at work.
